Maximalists?

Our cooperative model

Maximalist cooperatives are non-profit, egalitarian and socially committed cooperatives that operate by consensus and renounce the use of intellectual property and other forms of artificial scarcity as a way to generate income.

We are not neutral either in the face of the great challenges of our time (climate change, war, rural depopulation...) or in the face of the degradation of the material and cultural conditions of neighborhoods and towns.

What do you do with your surpluses?

We invest our surpluses in social and local development projects that improve the life of our neighborhoods and villages and revitalize our natural environment.

Soon we will have a calendar of virtual meetings. Meanwhile if you work or collaborate with a cooperative in an EU country and if what you have read resonates with you, please write to us.

Promoters

Communalia is Latin for “celebration of the commons.” It represents the first stone laid of an old dream: a dream where maximalist cooperatives share projects, tools, and knowledge in order to reach the scale necessary to meet the needs of our members as well as the geographical and social scope required to maximise the social impact of our work.

Our first members were two worker cooperatives based in towns suffering from depopulation in Spain and France. They fight for the sustainable repopulation of rural areas while simultaneously selling products and services globally.

Compañía Maximalista S.Coop.

Compañía Maximalista is based in a white village of 280 inhabitants surrounded by greenery in the southwest of Spain. It has sold consulting services to companies, administrations and foundations on three continents. Its projects and services are based on knowledge and have a strong digital and social component. It is responsible for guiding, from the planning phases to consolidation, some of the most dynamic non-profit foundations in recent years in Spain and Latin America. It is a pioneer in the fight against rural depopulation and in the promotion of worker cooperatives in the rural world.

Alidade SCop

Based in an small town surrounded by vines in the Dordogne, France, Alidade designs and executes local and community development projects with a strong technological and participatory component. Its projects range from the recuperation of spaces in order to fuel the cultural revitalization of small villages to the creation of fablabs or the participatory design of plans for the promotion and revitalization of the local economy.

Fundación Repoblación

Based in Spain Fundación Repoblación is committed to a rural repopulation model based on sustainable development and the promotion of the way of life that the rural world makes possible. Its slogan states: «A region in depopulation can be your place in the world. We work so that you can build a better life there than what the city offers you.” It organizes the Repopulation NEB Fest and publishes Memoria, a blog with its activities.

Centro de Estudios Maximalistas

CEM is an association based in Spain dedicated to researching the history of cooperativism and community experiences based on the commons and collective property; the training of cooperative members and cooperative promoters; and the incubation of new cooperatives. It publishes the blog Maximalismo and organizes the "Maximalist Congress" every year.
